Hi, I'm Gina Miller, and today for About.com we are going to go over tips for visiting Rome. Rome is known as the eternal city because it can be traced back to the earliest days of civilization. Most scientists and historians believe that it was founded in the year 625 BC.

Transportation to Rome

Getting to Rome is easy by flying into the Fiumicino Airport and taking a train, bus or taxi into the city. Rome is a large city with a metro subway and an elaborate bus system to get around. However the historic center of the city is rather small and easy to navigate by foot.

What to See in Rome

First, you must visit the famous Colosseum. It's a huge amphitheater dating back to ancient Roman times, where 80,000 spectators would watch Gladiators battle wild animals, and each other. The Colosseum is located just steps outside the Metro station so ití»s very easy to find.

The Vatican City is Located in Rome

Next, you'll want to visit Vatican City which is home of the Pope. It is technically its own country but is located west side of the Tiber River. Here you can see St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The Basilica is free but the only way to visit the Sistine Chapel is through the Vatican Museum which costs about 15 Euros.

Another great sight is the Pantheon, which is the best preserved ancient building in the city. It was built in 118 AD and at the top of the dome is a large opening, or oculus, which was the only source of light. It offers free admission and is great way to take in the history of Rome.

Visit the Spanish Steps in Rome

Next the Spanish Steps. The idea of connecting the church with the square below originates from the 17th century. The elegant staircase consists of 137 steps over twelve different flights. Not only does it provide a beautiful view of the city from above -- it's the doorway to some of the best shopping in the world at the bottom.

Toss a Coin in Rome's Trevi Fountain

Finally, you must end your day at the Trevi Fountain located in the Piazza Fontana di Trevi. The fountain takes up almost the whole piazza and is known for its central figurehead statue of Neptune

Here's a tip: Be sure to toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain and make a wish. Maybe you could wish for a few more days to visit this fantastic city.And those are tips for visiting Rome.
